From Bank to Boutique: The Story of The Municipal Grand

If These Walls Could Talk
In Savannah, history is never far away. Streets curve past moss-covered oaks, public squares tell their own layered stories, and even the buildings carry echoes of their past. The Municipal Grand is no exception. Before it became one of the newest boutique hotels in Savannah, Georgia, it served the city as a mid-century Federal Savings Bank.
A Landmark with Strong Foundations
The original bank stood with a quiet authority on a prominent corner in Savannah’s Historic District. Built mainly from concrete, its clean lines and solid form reflected the confidence of its time. When the decision was made to reimagine it as a hotel, the goal wasn’t to erase that identity but to build on it. The design balances the strength of the structure with softer elements: curved walls, arched openings, and spaces that invite discovery.
Today, that balance makes the Municipal Grand one of the most unique hotels Savannah has to offer.

Details That Endure
The architects at AAmp Studio worked carefully to preserve elements that made the building special. Terrazzo patterned floors, blue mosaic tile columns, and mid-century wood paneling remain part of the story. Metal accents, rich woods, and natural stone now add warmth.
These textures and colours echo Savannah itself—layered, vibrant, and full of character. Public areas are designed as a sequence of spaces to linger in: the reception, the lobby bar, the lower-level bar, the mezzanine lounge, and the rooftop pool deck. Each one feels distinct, yet together they create a rhythm that flows through the building.
Guest Rooms Reimagined
The guest suites continue this story with a more intimate touch. Natural materials, soft textiles, and custom furniture make each room feel like a retreat. Light plays across surfaces throughout the day, changing the mood and reminding you that the design is not static—it’s alive with the rhythm of the city.
Staying here is not about being removed from Savannah. It’s about being placed right at its centre, with the comfort of knowing you can retreat into calm when you wish.
A Place of History and Stories
Exploring the history of the building also uncovers the story of the bank that once stood here, even before the First Federal Savings Building. An 1882 Brown Back $20 bank note, issued by the Savannah NationalBank, gives a glimpse into that era. The note carries the signatures of T.F. Thomson, Cashier, and Herman Myers, President—names once tied to the city’s financial life.
The image below is a reminder that long before it became a hotel, this site played a role in Savannah’s growth. The Municipal Grand continues that story today, carrying the sites past into its new purpose.

A Hotel That Belongs to Savannah
Savannah has no shortage of places to stay, but the Municipal Grand feels different. Its identity is deeply tied to the building’s past while being firmly rooted in the city’s present. That’s why it has quickly become part of the conversation about the most interesting hotels Savannah GA offers today.
The name “Municipal Grand” reflects both its civic past and its new purpose. Once a place where Savannahians gathered for business, it is now a place where visitors gather to experience the city itself.

A Warm Invitation
When you walk through the lobby, sit at the bar, or take in the view from the rooftop Sun Club, you’re part of a story that stretches back more than a century. That is the essence of Savannah—past and present always overlapping.
The Municipal Grand was created to serve this fine city, but it also exists for those who come here seeking connection, comfort, and discovery. If you’re considering where to stay, among the wide choice of hotels in Savannah, Georgia, this is one that truly belongs to the city’s fabric.
